Skydiver in critical condition after 'very hard landing' in Parakai, West Auckland

A skydiver who was seriously injured in a crash today had deployed his parachute but struck the ground "very hard" when landing.

The man, aged in his 30s, was flown to Auckland City Hospital by Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition after the skydiving accident in Parakai, West Auckland this morning.

Skydive Auckland operations manager Fiona McLaren said he was a highly experienced sport skydiver.

"After an uneventful skydive including normal parachute deployment and parachute opening, [he] ... suffered a very hard landing," she said.

No further information was available at this stage.
